A child's first bookshelf does not need to be big. A low shelf near their bed, within easy reach, works best. Start with eight to ten books they already love, so the shelf feels familiar from day one. Add new titles slowly, so it stays inviting rather than crowded.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Picture height matters more than style. A shelf a toddler can reach is a shelf that gets used.<\/em><\/p>

Second hand shelving works well here. A sturdy wooden crate or an old bookcase, sanded down and painted, is often better than something new, because a bump or a scribble will not matter so much.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Sort the first shelf by picture, not by author. Covers facing out help a young child find a favourite book on their own, long before they can read the spine or the title.<\/p>

Rotate the books every few months. A shelf that never changes becomes wallpaper, something a child stops noticing.<\/p>

Put the box of outgrown books away for six months before deciding what to give away. Children often come back to a story once they can read it properly themselves.<\/p><\/blockquote>

Keep a small basket next to the shelf for library books. It stops them getting mixed up with books that belong to the house, and makes return day far less of a search.<\/p>
