An AirTag is one of the most useful small gadgets Apple has made. Clip it to your keys, drop it in a backpack or tuck it into your suitcase, and you can see where it is on a map through the Find My network. For years there was one big annoyance, though. Only one Apple Account could own and track an AirTag. If you shared a car with your partner, and the car keys had an AirTag, only one of you could find them. Worse, the other person would get warnings that an unknown AirTag was travelling with them. Since iOS 17 that problem is fixed, and sharing is now simple to set up.<\/p>

Before you start, check a few basics. Every person you want to share with needs an iPhone or iPad on a recent version of iOS or iPadOS, and they must be signed in to their own Apple Account. You can share one AirTag with up to five other people. Everyone who accepts can see its location, play a sound on it and use Precision Finding on supported iPhones to walk right up to it. Only the owner can remove it from the account, rename it or turn on Lost Mode, which is worth remembering.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Open the Find My app on your iPhone and tap Items at the bottom. Choose the AirTag you want to share. Scroll down until you see Share This AirTag, then tap Add Person. Pick someone from your contacts, check the name, and tap Share. The other person gets a notification and has to accept the invitation before the AirTag shows up in their own Find My app.<\/p>

Tip from our team: share the AirTag while the other person is standing next to you. You can help them accept straight away and test it by playing a sound.<\/p><\/blockquote>

Once they accept, they will no longer get unwanted tracking alerts for that AirTag. This is the part many families care about most. What about people who use Android? Unfortunately, you cannot share an AirTag with an Android phone. Find My only works on Apple devices. Android users can still see when an unknown AirTag is moving with them, because Android now has built-in alerts for unknown trackers. If your household has a mix of phones, consider a tracker that works with both systems, or keep the AirTag on the iPhone owner's keys. Samsung owners have a similar option in SmartTag, which works with the SmartThings Find network, but it does not talk to Apple's system at all.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Sharing is not a forever choice. The owner can open the AirTag in Find My at any time and see a list of the people it is shared with. Tap a name and choose Remove to stop sharing with that person. They lose access straight away, and the AirTag disappears from their app.<\/p>

People who were shared with can also remove themselves. They open the item in their Find My app and tap Remove. This is useful if a relationship changes or someone simply no longer needs to track a set of keys. It is a good idea to review your shared items every few months. Just like old passwords, old sharing permissions tend to stay around longer than they should.<\/p>

One privacy point matters. When you share an AirTag, everyone in the group can see its location, and by extension where the person carrying it is. The AirTag itself also needs a little care. It runs on a common CR2032 coin cell that lasts about a year. Your iPhone warns you when it runs low. Buy good quality batteries, because some cheap ones have a bitter coating that stops them from making proper contact inside the AirTag. Swapping it takes seconds: press down on the back and twist.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

A newer feature called Share Item Location lets you send a temporary link to someone outside your family, such as an airline. If your suitcase goes missing, they can see where the AirTag is on a web page. The link expires on its own after a set time, or as soon as you get your bag back.<\/p>

Not every airline accepts these links yet, so check with yours before you fly. Even so, having an AirTag in your bag gives you proof of where it is.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
