Very few homes have furniture that all came from one place at one time. There is the oak table you bought when you moved in, the old kiaat chest from your gran, a pine bookshelf from student days and a new walnut-look bed. The question most people ask is simple: can all of these live in the same room without looking like a jumble sale?<\/p>

The short answer is yes. Mixed wood tones often look warmer and more personal than a perfectly matched set. The trick is to do it on purpose. A few simple rules around undertones, repetition and contrast make the difference between a room that feels collected over time and one that just feels random.<\/em><\/p>

Start With Undertones<\/h3>

Every wood has an undertone, and it matters more than depth. Oak and pine lean warm and yellow. Kiaat and cherry lean red and orange. Some grey-washed and smoked finishes lean cool. Woods with the same undertone usually sit comfortably together even if one is much darker than the other. Woods with clashing undertones, like a very orange pine next to a cool grey oak, fight each other. Put two pieces side by side in daylight. Pick one wood as the lead, usually the biggest surface, such as the floor or the dining table. Then add one or two supporting tones. Three different woods in a room is plenty, and more than that starts to look busy. If you have a honey-coloured oak floor, a darker kiaat sideboard and a pale oak chair can both work, because the floor ties them together. Try to repeat each tone at least twice in the room, even in small ways like a frame or bowl, so nothing looks like it wandered in by accident.<\/p>

Contrast Beats Matching<\/h3>

Near misses look worse than clear differences. A table and chairs that are almost, but not quite, the same colour look like a mistake. A light oak table with dark chairs, or the other way round, looks intentional. The same goes for flooring. If your wooden floor is mid-brown, choose furniture that is clearly lighter or clearly darker rather than a close match. Look at the grain as well as the colour. A busy, strongly figured wood like kiaat looks best next to calm, straight-grained timber. Two loud grains side by side compete. Finish changes colour more than people realise. A matte oiled oak and a glossy lacquered oak can look like completely different woods. When I restore old pieces for Cape Town clients, I try to match the sheen of the rest of the room first. Remember that wood changes with age. Oak and pine get deeper and more golden in the sun, while kiaat darkens quite quickly. A new piece may look too light next to an older one for the first year.
