Around June, the phone calls start. A tabletop has opened a hairline crack, a drawer suddenly sticks, or a chair joint that was solid in March now wobbles. Nothing is wrong with the wood. It is reacting to the dry, cold air that settles over Gauteng every winter.<\/em><\/p>

Our\u00a0winter care checklist<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0covers what actually happens to timber when humidity drops, and the small habits that keep oak, pine and kiaat looking good until the spring rains arrive. None of it needs special products or a workshop. Solid wood is made of fibres that take in moisture from the air and give it back again. On the Highveld, winter humidity drops below 20 percent for weeks.\u00a0The result:<\/strong>\u00a0boards shrink slightly across the grain, and any joint that cannot move with them starts to complain. That is why gaps appear in July and close again in November. Coastal homes rarely see it this badly. In Johannesburg and Pretoria, with heaters running every evening, it is almost guaranteed on older pieces.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The biggest cause of winter damage is not the weather but the heater standing right next to the furniture. A gas heater a metre from a sideboard dries one side faster than the other, and that uneven drying bends and splits boards.\u00a0Keep distance.<\/strong>\u00a0Aim for at least 1.5 m between any heater and your solid wood pieces. Do not park a fan heater under the dining table, and try not to place a headboard right under a sunny north-facing window, where the low winter sun bakes it every afternoon.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

You do not need an expensive humidifier. A bowl of water near the heater, pot plants and washing drying indoors all help more than expected. A cheap\u00a0humidity meter<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0from a hardware store tells you where you stand. Between 40 and 55 percent suits both people and timber. If your lounge sits at 25 percent for most of July, a small humidifier in the evenings is worth it, especially for an heirloom or a new oak table. During load-shedding the heater goes off anyway, so the air recovers a little. Long stretches of heating on still, frosty nights do the real damage.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Oiled finishes need more attention in winter. Wipe the surface with a damp cloth, let it dry, then work in a thin coat of furniture oil or beeswax polish with a soft rag. If a crack or gap does appear, please do not rush to fill it with glue or wood filler. Wait until\u00a0spring humidity<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0returns and check again, because most seasonal gaps close on their own. Filling a winter gap can cause trouble later, since the swelling wood has nowhere to go and may split elsewhere. Rub sticking drawer runners with a candle. Loose chair joints are different: they will not fix themselves, and a wobbly chair only gets worse.
