HANDWOVEN GRASS BASKETS

Woven from ilala palm and grass by weavers in Inanda. Each basket is coiled by hand over several days, so the pattern and shape vary a little. Use it for storing blankets, toys or firewood kindling, or hang it on a wall as a bold piece of decor. Brush off dust with a dry cloth and keep it out of damp corners.

Every basket from Inanda Weavers is made by hand, from the first coil to the last stitch. The weavers dye their own grass using natural colours, so no two baskets are exactly alike. Sturdy enough for daily use and pretty enough to leave on show.

Each basket comes with a small care card. Wipe it gently with a damp cloth and let it dry in the shade. In the KZN humidity, store it somewhere with a little airflow. Handled well, it will last for many years.

SOFT LEATHER BELTS

Every piece in the Kraalwerk shop is made by hand by a maker in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. We visit the studios ourselves, meet the people at the bench and agree a fair price before anything reaches our shelves. Each item is finished slowly, so small differences in colour, grain and weave are normal and are part of the charm. Wood is sourced from local offcuts and fallen timber, then sanded smooth and sealed with a natural oil. Beads are strung one at a time. Baskets are coiled over many hours. When you buy from us, the money goes straight back to the person who made it. Please handle with care, keep out of direct sun and wipe clean with a soft, slightly damp cloth.

Our makers work with what is close to home. Clay comes from the river banks near Pietermaritzburg, leather from local tanneries and grasses from the Midlands hills. Nothing is mass produced, so you may find two pieces that look alike but never match exactly. If you have a question about size, finish or care, send us a message and we will check with the maker.

HANDMADE IN KZN

Kraalwerk began as a small stall at the Pietermaritzburg craft market. Today we work with beaders, weavers, potters and leatherworkers across the Midlands. Each maker sets their own price and keeps the credit for their work. We photograph every item in natural light, so what you see is what arrives. Colours may look slightly different on your screen. Sizes are measured by hand and can vary by a centimetre or two. Small marks are part of handmade work.

Orders are packed at our shop on Church Street and sent within two working days. Most parcels reach Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town in three to five days. If something arrives damaged, send us a photo and we will replace it or refund you. Gifts can be wrapped in kraft paper with a handwritten card at no extra charge. We also welcome custom orders, such as a beaded name tag or a basket in your own colours. Just ask the maker through us and we will pass your request on. Allow two to three weeks for custom work, as every piece is made from scratch.
