Bringing natural textures into your home

Overhead flatlay of natural textures for the home: linen, jute twine, dried grasses, a small ceramic bowl and a bar of h

Bringing green into your home does not need a big budget. A few handmade pieces can change a room. Start with a woven basket by the door and a ceramic pot for a plant. Add a leather strap or a wooden block and let the natural textures do the work. Pick local pieces that suit the light in your space.

Choose things you will use every day. A bowl that holds fruit, a basket for blankets, a cushion cover with a hand-printed pattern. Small choices add up, and they keep local makers busy.

Meet the makers

Every piece comes from a maker you can name, working close to home.

Natural materials bring calm to a room. Clay, grass, leather and wood all age well and feel good to touch. Pick two or three textures and repeat them across the room. A basket, a bowl and a wooden block are plenty. Keep colours soft and let the handmade finish stand out.

Choosing natural pieces

Start small. Choose one wall or one shelf and give it your attention. Hang a piece of string art above a side table, or set a driftwood candle holder on the windowsill. Step back and look before you add more. Leave some space around each piece so it can be seen properly.

A home feels warmer when the things in it have a story. Ask the maker how a piece was made and where the materials came from. That story will stay with you every time you walk past it.
