Start with one piece you already like. Most people go wrong by trying to build a whole look at once, when the better way is to pick the necklace or the ring you reach for anyway and hang everything else off that. If your everyday piece is a fine gold chain, the second piece should be shorter or longer, not the same length. If it is a chunky ring, the second ring should be plain. Simple jewellery gets a bad name for being safe, which is unfair. A plain gold hoop worn on its own reads as a decision. The same hoop buried under four other things reads as clutter. The trick is not owning more, it is knowing which few things to put on and then stopping. That takes practice. This is easier in a South African summer than most places, because so much of what we wear is plain cotton and linen, and plain clothes give small jewellery somewhere to sit.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

These four rules cover almost everything. Break them once you know why they work, and not before, because the exceptions only look right on purpose.<\/p>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Two chains of the same length will tangle all day and read as one thick chain from across a room. Give them at least 5 cm between them. A 40 cm choker over a 50 cm pendant works because each one has its own space on the chest.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Gold and silver together used to be a mistake and is now a choice, but it only works if you repeat it. One silver ring among five gold ones looks like an accident. Two silver and three gold, or a two tone piece that carries both, looks deliberate to anyone who sees it.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t
  • \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tKeep weight at the bottom. If you are layering, the heaviest pendant should be on the longest chain. Put the heavy piece on the short chain and it pulls the whole arrangement forward and sits badly, especially on a soft knit or a summer dress. It is a small thing that shows.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Pick the one nearest whatever you want people to look at, and let the other side of the outfit stay quiet.     Everyday wear is where all of this actually gets tested. A look that works in front of a mirror at seven in the morning has to survive a car, a laptop, a jersey going on and off, and a shopping bag on one arm. That is why we keep coming back to hoops, short chains and low profile rings for daily pieces, and save the drop earrings and the long pendants for the days you are going somewhere.<\/p>

    If you are building from nothing, three pieces will carry you a long way. One pair of hoops in a size that suits your face. One fine chain at about 45 cm, with a small pendant that you can swap out. One ring with some weight to it, worn on whichever hand feels right. Those three go with work clothes, a braai on a Sunday and a wedding, and they cost less together than one statement piece. Add slowly after that, and only when you know what is missing rather than what is new.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
