Buying perfume for someone else feels risky. Scent is personal, and nobody wants to hand over a bottle that ends up at the back of a cupboard. The good news is that a bit of planning takes most of the guesswork out. You need a rough idea of what they already like, a sensible budget, and enough time for delivery. This guide covers sizes, samples, prices and courier timing, so you can give something that gets used. It works for birthdays, anniversaries, Christmas and that awkward thank you for a neighbour who fed the cat all December.
1. Start with What They Already Wear
The easiest clue is sitting on their dressing table. Take a quick look at the bottles they own, or notice what they smell like when you hug them. Is it fresh and citrusy, soft and floral, or warm and sweet? You do not need the exact name. Knowing the family is enough to point you in the right direction. If you cannot sneak a look, think about their style. Someone who lives in running shoes may not want the same scent as someone who dresses up for Sunday lunch.
2. Choosing the Right Size and Budget
Every Vesperine scent comes in three sizes. The 100ml bottle costs R1,950 and makes a proper gift for a milestone birthday or a wedding. The 50ml bottle costs R1,250 and suits most occasions, especially if you are not sure the scent will be a favourite. Four of our 100ml bottles are on sale at R1,595, which is worth checking before you decide. Set your budget first and then pick the size. A smaller bottle of the right scent beats a big bottle of the wrong one every time.
3. Why a Few Samples Make the Smartest Gift
If you really have no idea, give choice instead of a guess. Our 2ml samples cost R120 each, so three or four of them in different families come in well under the price of a small bottle. The person gets to wear each one for a day or two and find the one they love. Then they can buy the full bottle themselves, or you can. Just note that samples are not returnable, so treat them as the gift itself. Tie them up with a handwritten card.
4. Plan Delivery So It Arrives in Good Time
A courier can get a parcel almost anywhere in South Africa, but it still takes time. Cape Town orders usually arrive in one to two working days, and the rest of the country in two to four. Every parcel is tracked, so you can watch it move. Standard delivery costs R120 and is free on orders over R1,500. Order at least a week early in December, when couriers are busy and public holidays slow things down. You can also collect in person from our Cape Town studio.
5. What to Do If It Is Not Right
Even careful gift buyers get it wrong sometimes. That is why sealed bottles can be returned within 30 days. Tell the person to keep the cellophane on until they are sure, and to test from a sample first if you included one. Once a bottle is opened, it cannot come back, so this matters. If you are nervous, include a short note saying they are welcome to swap it. Most people appreciate that. It takes the pressure off and makes the gift feel thoughtful rather than a gamble.
Final Tips
A good perfume gift comes down to three things: a rough idea of their taste, a size that fits your budget, and enough time for the courier. Get those right and you are most of the way there. If you are still stuck, send us a WhatsApp on 082 555 0142 with a few words about the person, and we will suggest two or three scents that could work. We do this every week, especially in the run-up to Mother's Day and Christmas. It is quick and free.
