People often ask what actually happens inside a small perfume studio. The short answer is a lot of smelling, a lot of writing things down, and more waiting than you would expect. Our studio sits at 38 Harrington Street in Cape Town, and six of us work there. Nadia Fourie started Vesperine in 2016 at her kitchen table, and the process has grown since then, but the basics have not changed. 1. Monday Starts with a Simple Idea<\/h4> \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t

Most blends begin with a memory, not a formula. It might be the smell of wet stone on Table Mountain, a jasmine hedge in Observatory, or a kitchen full of cinnamon in July. Nadia writes the idea down in plain words first, then lists the notes that could build it. Nothing is mixed yet. The team sits around the big table on Monday morning, drinks too much coffee, and talks it through. Some ideas die right there. On Tuesday the scales come out. Every trial is weighed to a fraction of a gram and logged in a notebook, because a small change can shift the whole scent. Nadia trained as a chemist, so precision matters here. A single idea can need twenty or thirty small trials before one feels right. Each one goes into a labelled vial and onto a paper strip. We smell them fresh, again after an hour, and again the next morning. Most get tossed. That is normal, and it is part of the work.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

3. Midweek Is for Wearing It in Real Life<\/h4> \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t

A scent on paper is not the same as a scent on skin. By Wednesday the best trials go home with the team. We wear them to work, to the shops, on a windy walk along the Sea Point promenade. We note when the scent fades, what the dry-down smells like, and whether anyone comments. Different skin changes a blend a lot, so six noses help. On Thursday we compare notes. Often the winner is not the one we expected at the start of the week.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

4. Letting the Blend Rest Before It Is Bottled<\/h4> \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Once a formula is settled, the blend is mixed in a larger batch and left to rest. This part cannot be rushed. The oils need weeks in a cool, dark room to settle and marry together. A blend that smells a little rough on day one often turns smooth and round by week six. We test it again at every stage. Only when it smells right on paper, skin and in the bottle do we sign it off for filling. Friday is the busy day. Bottles are filled by hand in 100ml, 50ml and 2ml sizes, then capped, labelled and checked one by one. Online orders are packed in the afternoon and handed to the courier before closing. Cape Town parcels usually arrive in one or two working days, and the rest of the country in two to four. Every parcel is tracked. Orders over R1,500 ship free. By five the floor is swept, the scales are clean, and someone has already started next week's list.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
