Summer here is hard on perfume. A scent that lasts all day in June can be gone by eleven in January. Heat speeds up the way fragrance leaves your skin, and dry air, wind and sweat all take their share. That does not mean you have to spray more of it. It mostly means changing how and where you apply it, and how you look after the bottle. What follows are five simple habits that make a real difference on a hot South African day. 1. Spray Onto Clean, Moisturised Skin<\/h4> \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Perfume needs something to hold onto. Dry skin lets it go quickly, and after a hot shower or a swim your skin is drier than you think. Spray straight after a shower while your skin is still slightly damp. Better still, use a plain unscented lotion first, then apply. The oil in the lotion slows everything down and you can gain a few good hours. Never rub your wrists together afterwards. That friction breaks the top notes and shortens the whole thing. A thin layer is enough, and it only takes a moment to soak in.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Warm spots on the body push scent outward, which is what you want. Neck, behind the ears, inner elbows and the base of the throat all work. In real heat, go lower too: the chest under a shirt, or behind the knees. Scent rises through the day. Spraying your shirt instead of your skin feels safer, but cotton holds the alcohol and none of the warmth, so it fades flat and can stain pale fabric. Hair holds scent well too, so a light mist over a brush works on hot days.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

3. Store the Bottle Out of the Heat<\/h4> \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Heat and light are the two things that wreck a bottle. A perfume left in a car in Upington or on a sunny windowsill will turn within one summer. The smell goes sharp and the colour darkens. Keep bottles in a cupboard, in a drawer, or in the box they arrived in. Cool and dark is all it needs. Avoid the bathroom shelf too, because steam and temperature swings there do slow damage over months. A bottle kept this way will stay true for three years or more.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

4. Pick Heavier Base Notes for Hot Days<\/h4> \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Light citrus smells wonderful at eight in the morning and vanishes by ten. If you need staying power in the heat, look at what sits underneath. Amber, vanilla, tonka, sandalwood and resins are heavier molecules and they hold on much longer. A blend from Quiet Hours or Dark Velvet will outlast a bright cologne by hours. Use a lighter hand with those, though. One spray of something rich beats four sprays of something thin on a humid day. Even a good blend needs help after eight hours in Highveld sun. Keep a 2ml sample vial in your bag or the cubbyhole. It costs R120, it weighs almost nothing, and one spray at four in the afternoon resets the whole thing. Do not layer a second scent over the first. Use the same one so it builds rather than clashes. If you sweat a lot, wipe the area with a tissue before you spray again. Heat is not the enemy, it just changes the timing. Moisturise first, spray warm skin, keep the bottle in the dark, and lean towards richer blends when the temperature climbs.
