Why wooden toys still win
Wooden toys have been loved for generations, and there is a good reason they keep coming back. They feel warm in little hands and they are built to last through all the bumps and tumbles. Best of all, they leave room for imagination, so a simple block can become a castle or a car.
Parents also like that wooden toys are sturdy, calm and free of noisy batteries. They can be passed down from one child to the next, and they work for babies right up to twelve-year-olds.
Built Tough
When you shop, check that the paint is water based and the edges are sanded smooth. Look for a safety mark on the box too.
Keep wooden toys dry and wipe them with a damp cloth. That is all they need. A good set will still be around for the next baby.
Years Later
Good wooden toys are sanded smooth and finished with paint that is safe for little hands and mouths. There are no small parts that snap off and no sharp edges left over from a mould. We check this before anything goes on our shelves, because a toy that looks natural is not automatically a toy that is safe for a two year old to chew on.
Wooden toys slow children down in a good way. There is no sound that rewards pressing the right button, so a child has to work out how the blocks balance or how the wheels turn by trying it themselves. That small bit of struggle is where the learning happens, and it is also why a wooden toy bought today can still be the one your child reaches for in two years, long after a flashier toy has been forgotten.
