Choosing by age, not by box

Child's hands choosing among colourful wooden building blocks in a wooden tray, age-appropriate play

Age labels on toy boxes are a starting point, not a rule. A confident three year old might manage a game made for five, while another child needs more time. Watch how your child plays, not just their age.

At Speelbox we use age as a guide, not a rule. If you are not sure, tell us what your child enjoys and we will point you to something that fits.

Watch before you buy

A few minutes of noticing what your child reaches for tells you more than any age sticker does.

Bring your child along if you can. A minute of watching them play tells you more than the box.

The box will tell you a suggested age, but only your child can tell you if a toy actually fits. Some children are ready for small building pieces earlier than others, and some stick with soft toys and simple dolls far longer than the box suggests, and that is perfectly fine.

Signs it fits

A good trick is to ignore the number and look at the skill the toy needs. Can your child sort shapes, follow three steps, or sit still for a story. That tells you more than the age printed on the box.

Buy for the child in front of you, not the age on the label.
