BUILDING A GARDEN GATE
A simple gate build that any DIYer can finish in a weekend with basic tools and a good plan from our team.
We started with treated pine from Sterkhout Timber, cut to length at our counter in Polokwane. The frame was squared, braced and fixed with galvanised screws, then the hinges and latch went on last. Take your time with the measuring, because a gate that hangs true is worth the extra hour.
Next came the paint. We sanded every edge, applied one coat of primer and two coats of Spitskop Paints exterior enamel, letting each coat dry fully in the Limpopo heat before the next.
Total cost came to about R1,850 for timber, hardware and paint. A hired builder would have charged much more, and the family now has a gate they built themselves. If you get stuck, pop in and our staff will talk you through it.
Before You Start
Check the ground is level, mark your post holes and let the concrete cure for two days. Wear gloves and eye protection, keep a spirit level close by, and ask us about the right screws and hinges for your gate size and weight.
