Autumn is a good time to plan a new kitchen in George. The weather cools, the workshop has room in the diary, and your cupboards can be fitted before the festive rush. Start by measuring the space and writing down what frustrates you today.

Send us your measurements and photos and we will draw up a free quote for you. Or read on to see what happens from first design to installation day.

Many people assume a new kitchen means weeks of dust and chaos. In our experience, good planning prevents most of that. As one George homeowner told us, the measuring visit was the moment it all became real, because every drawer and shelf had its place on paper.

So what should you decide first? Pick your door style and colour, then your worktop. The cupboard carcasses, hinges and handles follow. Most delays happen when these choices are made late, so settle them before the cutting list goes to our workshop, and keep your budget in view.

Last month we fitted a kitchen in Heatherlands where the owners wanted a deep green shaker door with a pale oak top. The result was warm, calm and easy to keep clean. It is one of our most requested looks this year.

If you are unsure about a colour, ask for a small door sample. Hold it against your wall in morning and evening light. A sample costs far less than a wrong decision, and it helps everyone at home agree before we start cutting.

Not sure which door finish suits your kitchen? Here are the four we make most often in George:

  • Melamine: Hard wearing and easy to wipe, a good fit for busy family kitchens.

  • Wrap: Smooth to the touch, works well for handleless doors and comes in many colours.

  • Solid wood: Warm to look at and can be sanded and refinished years later.

  • Oak veneer: The look of real oak at a lower price, with a black edge if you like.
