CUT BY HAND
Sizing is printed on the inside of the left temple in the usual order: lens width, bridge, then temple length in millimetres. If you have a pair that already fits well, read those numbers and match them. Not sure? Send us a photo holding a bank card under your eye and we will work the measurements out for you.
Larkspec began with two people, a small bench and a jar of hinge screws on Loop Street. We wanted glasses that were made near the people wearing them, repaired rather than replaced, and priced so you could still eat that month.
Ten years on the bench has not moved. We still cut acetate by hand, still grind lenses in the back room, and still write your measurements in a book so the next pair fits the first time. Bring a frame in and we will look at it.
ROUND OPTICAL FRAME
This frame is made in small runs at our Cape Town workshop, a few dozen at a time, so no two sheets of acetate ever give the same pattern through the temples. The front is milled, hand filed and then tumbled for three days until the edges go soft and warm to the touch. Stainless steel core wires run the length of each arm, which means we can heat the tips and bend them to the shape of your head without weakening anything. Lenses are cut in house, whether you need a single vision script, a reading strength, a screen filter or a plain sun tint. Sizing, weight in grams and bridge width are listed under the specifications tab, and we adjust the fit for free at the shop.
The acetate we use comes from a mill that has been pressing sheets for over sixty years, and it holds colour right through the block rather than sitting on the surface. That means a scratch will not show a pale line underneath. Warm it slightly, adjust the temples, and the frame keeps the new shape without any fight from the material.
LOOP STREET ROUND
Every Larkspec frame starts as a flat sheet of acetate that we cut, file and polish by hand in our Loop Street workshop. The fronts are shaped over three days, then tumbled with shaped pegs until the edges feel soft against the skin. Hinges are set into the temples by hand so the arms open with a steady, even pull rather than a loose swing. Nothing leaves the bench until it sits level on a flat surface and holds its line when you gently flex it.
Fit matters more than anything else with glasses, so we keep the bridge shallow and the temples slightly longer than the usual run. That combination suits most South African faces and stops the frame sliding down on a warm day in town. Lenses are cut in our own lab, whether you need a single vision script, a progressive, or a plain demo lens to start with. Each pair ships in a hard case with a cleaning cloth, and you have thirty days to send it back.
A rounded front with a low keyhole bridge, cut from honey acetate and fitted with spring hinges so the arms flex outward without straining at the rim or loosening over time.
Lens width sits at 48 mm, bridge at 21 mm, temples at 145 mm. The frame weighs 26 grams in total. Best suited to narrow and medium faces.
