Lingerie Care

What to wear under a wedding dress

Lace is delicate, but it is not difficult. Fill a basin with cool water and add a small amount of gentle wash. Let the piece soak for ten minutes. Press the water through the fabric with your fingers. Never wring or twist it. Rinse until the water runs clear.

Roll the piece in a clean towel to take out the water, then lay it flat in the shade. Direct sun and tumble dryers wear out elastic quickly. Fasten the hooks before washing so they do not snag the lace. Cared for this way, a good set can last for years.

Washing basics

Hand washing takes about fifteen minutes and saves your lingerie from the harsh spin of a machine. If you must use a machine, put each piece in a mesh bag and choose a cold, gentle cycle. Skip fabric softener, because it coats the fibres and weakens the stretch.

Wash bras after every two or three wears so the elastic has time to recover. Rotate at least three bras through the week. Store them with the cups nested, not folded flat, so the shape stays true. Dark and light colours should always be washed apart.

Washing basics

Sleepwear for Highveld nights should breathe. Cotton, modal and light satin all work well in summer, when the evenings stay warm after a storm. In winter, switch to a brushed knit or a soft robe over a slip. Pick a loose cut that does not twist in your sleep, and keep a spare set for washing days so you always have one that is fresh.

Under a fitted office shirt, choose a smooth, lightly padded bra in a skin tone that matches you, not white. A balconette keeps the line of the neckline clean, and a bralette works well under looser blouses. Check the buttons at the bust in a mirror before you leave home. If the fabric gapes, go up a cup size or try a plunge style instead. Comfort matters through a long day at your desk.
