Building a lingerie drawer on a budget

Building a lingerie drawer does not need a big budget. Start with three everyday bras in skin, black and one colour you love. Add a few briefs in cotton blends that you can wash often. Then buy one special set a season, and wait for sales to do it. A little planning stops the drawer from filling with pieces that never get worn.

Buy the best fit you can, not the cheapest price. A bra that fits will outlast two that do not.

Bring a friend, ask your questions and leave with a bra that finally feels right.

A good bra should do three things. The band holds most of the support, so it should sit snug and level across your back. The cups should hold the whole breast without spilling or gaping. The straps simply finish the job and should never carry the weight on their own. If one of these fails, the fit is wrong.

Signs to look for

Band sizes and cup sizes work together, which is why they confuse so many people. A 34B and a 32C hold the same volume, just on a different frame. The band number is the ribcage, and the cup letter is the difference from your bust. Once you see it that way, finding a sister size is simple.

If a band feels too loose, go down a band and up a cup. If the band feels too tight, do the opposite. Always fit a new bra on the loosest hook, so you can tighten as the elastic relaxes.
