HEMP CORK RUBBER
Our sneakers start with hemp grown in South Africa, woven into a strong, breathable canvas. We pair it with a cork footbed that moulds to your foot over time. The sole is natural rubber, cut and glued by hand in Muizenberg. Each pair is checked by the same people who made it, so small flaws are fixed before the box is closed.
Wear them barefoot or with socks. The cork footbed breathes, so your feet stay cool on warm days at Surfers Corner and dry on the walk home. The hemp canvas softens after a few weeks and starts to feel like your own.
Brush off dry dirt, then wipe with a damp cloth and mild soap. Let them dry in the shade, away from direct sun and heaters. A little beeswax balm now and then keeps the canvas ready for wet Cape winters. Sizes run true, so order your usual size.
KELP AND CORK
Every pair of Takkies starts in Muizenberg, a short walk from the sea. We design in small batches so we can pay close attention to the fit, the stitching and the materials. The uppers are woven from hemp grown without heavy chemicals, then lined with recycled fibres that feel soft against bare feet. The soles are natural rubber and cork, which grip wet tar and sandy boardwalks without leaving a mark. Each pair is checked by hand before it leaves our workshop. We keep the colours earthy so they match shorts, jeans and work trousers. If you wear them hard, they will soften and age well. Rinse them, air dry them in the shade and they will keep going for years of beach days and city errands.
Our hemp comes from farms that rotate crops and use little water. It is spun and woven close to home, which keeps the footprint small and the quality easy to check. The recycled knit in our runners is made from old plastic bottles collected around the Cape, then cleaned and spun into soft yarn. Nothing is wasted if we can help it, and offcuts go to local makers.
MADE FROM HEMP
Takkies began as a small idea on Beach Road, Muizenberg. We wanted a sneaker that felt good to wear and did less harm to make. So we started with hemp and recycled yarn, and added cork and natural rubber for the sole. The first samples were tested on the beach, on Kalk Bay hills and on the daily commute. Some failed. Others turned into the pairs you see today. We kept going until the fit felt right for wide and narrow feet alike. Every size runs true, and our team can help with sizing if you are unsure.
Today we work with a few small workshops in the Western Cape. Each one is paid fairly and visited often. We share what we learn on the blog, from care tips to new materials. If something wears out too soon, tell us. We would rather fix it than see it in a landfill. Our repair advice is free, and we sell polish, balm and spare laces so your pair lasts.
