When a child’s fever needs a doctor

A fever is one of the most common reasons parents bring children to see us. In many cases it is a sign that the body is fighting off an everyday viral infection and will settle with rest, fluids and comfort. Still, it is natural to worry, and knowing which signs need attention helps you decide when to come in.

Contact a doctor promptly if a young baby has a fever, or if your child is unusually drowsy, struggling to breathe, refusing fluids, has a rash that does not fade when pressed or has a seizure. Trust your instincts as a parent. If something feels wrong, call the practice or seek emergency care straight away rather than waiting it out.
