Gauteng winters are dry and cold, and flu usually picks up in the colder months as people spend more time indoors together. Flu is more than a bad cold. For older adults, pregnant women, young children and people with chronic conditions, it can lead to serious complications such as pneumonia, so prevention is worth taking seriously.

A yearly flu vaccine is the best protection, ideally before the season peaks, and many medical aids cover it. Good hand washing, staying home when sick and covering coughs also reduce the spread at home and at work. If symptoms become severe, such as difficulty breathing or a high fever that will not settle, see a doctor promptly.
