Managing high blood pressure

High blood pressure is often called a silent condition because many people feel perfectly well while it slowly strains the heart, kidneys and blood vessels. The only way to know your numbers is to have them checked. If you have a family history, are overweight or have diabetes, regular checks at the practice are especially important.

Treatment usually combines lifestyle changes with medication where your doctor recommends it. Cutting back on salt, moving more, limiting alcohol and stopping smoking can all help. If you take medication, keep taking it as prescribed even when you feel well, and never stop without talking to your doctor. A home monitor can also be useful between visits.
