Understanding your medical aid’s chronic benefits

If you live with a long-term condition such as hypertension, diabetes or asthma, your medical aid may cover treatment from a chronic benefit rather than your day-to-day savings. Many of these conditions fall under the Prescribed Minimum Benefits, which medical schemes in South Africa must cover, although rules about medicine lists and designated providers can apply.

To register, your doctor usually completes an application with your diagnosis and treatment plan, and your scheme may ask for test results. Once approved, keep track of renewal dates and any changes to your medication. Our team can help with the paperwork, but it is worth calling your scheme to understand exactly what your plan covers.
