A check-up is a chance to pick up health problems early, often before you notice any symptoms.
When you book, tell reception you want a full check-up so we can give you a longer appointment. The doctor asks about your health, family history, work, sleep, exercise and any medicines you use. We then examine you and check your blood pressure, weight and blood sugar.
Depending on your age and history, the doctor may suggest further screening, such as cholesterol tests, a Pap smear or a prostate discussion. We explain why each test is useful before you decide.
Blood samples are usually taken at a pathology laboratory near the practice. When the results come back, we call you or book a follow-up visit to go through them together.
Before your check-up
Some blood tests need you to fast first, so ask reception when you book. Bring your ID, medical aid card and a list of your medicines. Many medical aids offer a yearly screening benefit, and reception can help you check what your plan covers.
