Choosing a helmet that fits properly

Rider trying on a plain full-face motorcycle helmet in a motorcycle gear shop, checking the fit

A helmet should feel snug all round, with no gaps and no pressure points. Measure your head just above the eyebrows and try on a few sizes.

Shake your head with the strap fastened. If the helmet moves on its own, it is too big. Check the date on the label and replace it after a hard knock.

Choosing your style

Commuters and long distance riders usually do best in a full face helmet for the extra protection.

Always check for a SABS or ECE safety sticker inside the helmet before you hand over any money.

A helmet that has been in even a minor crash should be replaced, even if the shell looks fine from the outside. The foam inside crushes to absorb impact and does not spring back, so it won't protect you the same way twice. The same goes for a helmet that has sat in the sun on your bike for five years or more.

What customers say

Replace your helmet after a hard knock or a drop onto a hard surface, even if it looks fine from outside. The foam inside crushes once and does not protect the same way twice. Most riders also replace a helmet every five years as the foam and straps age with heat and sweat.

A helmet is the one piece of gear you hope to never actually need, so do not save money on the one part that protects your head.
