How to build your first monthly budget on a South African salary

Most of us know what we earn but not where it goes. Ubuntuly shows your month in plain Rand, so you can see rent, groceries and taxi fares side by side. Start with one number you are happy to live on.

Set a small goal first. R200 a month into a savings jar adds up faster than you think, and it feels good to watch it grow.

Check in every Friday

Ten minutes on a Friday is enough. Open the app, look at what you spent, and move anything left over into your goal before the weekend starts. Small habits beat big plans every time.

Good budgeting starts with honest numbers. Write down your salary, your fixed costs and the money that disappears on small things. Ubuntuly sorts these for you, so you can see the whole picture at the end of each month without a spreadsheet.

Plan for the bumpy months

School fees in January, a birthday in March, a petrol hike in June. Add them to your calendar inside the app and put a little aside each month. When the big bill arrives, the money is already waiting.

I used to run out of money by the 20th. Now I set aside my stokvel amount the day I get paid, and I can see exactly what is left for groceries. Ubuntuly made it simple and I finally sleep better at night.

We started the Family Plan to teach the kids about saving. Each of them has a goal now, a bicycle or a school trip. Watching the bars fill up has turned pocket money into a real conversation at our dinner table.

As a freelancer my income jumps around. The app helped me split every payment into tax, bills and savings before I could spend it. Three months in, I have my first emergency fund and fewer sleepless nights.

I paid off two clothing accounts in a year by using the debt tracker. Seeing the balance drop every month kept me going. I recommend Ubuntuly to anyone who is tired of guessing where their salary went.

Start where you are

You do not need a big salary to build savings. You need a plan that fits your month. Pick one goal, such as a December holiday or a new fridge, and give it a name inside the app. Then decide how much to move each payday, even if it is only R50. Ubuntuly reminds you gently, tracks your progress and celebrates every step with you.
