Gifts for a child you do not know well

Flatlay of an assortment of giftable toys with plain wrapping paper and ribbon, suited to a child of unknown tastes

Buying for a child you do not know well is never easy. You have not seen what they already own, or what they are into this month, and you only have a few minutes in the shop.

The trick is to stop guessing and start asking. One question about age, a toy that works for more than one kind of play, and a kept receipt will get you most of the way there.

ACCESSORIES

If you can only ask one thing before you buy, ask the child's age. It narrows the shelf fast. A toy made for three year olds will frustrate an eight year old, and a toy with small parts is not safe for a toddler. Everything else is a nice to have.

For a toddler under three, keep it soft and simple. A plush toy or a wooden toy with big, easy pieces will hold their interest without any choking risk. You do not need to know their favourite character. Soft and sturdy wins almost every time at this age.

Under Three - Shop Soft Toys

Between four and seven, kids start picking sides, favourite colours and favourite games. A doll, an action figure or a simple board game is a safe bet, since most children this age are happy to play make believe or follow easy rules with a bit of help.

Ages Four To Seven - Shop Figures

From eight to twelve, children want something that feels like a real challenge. A building game, a strategy game or a wooden model gives them something to work at over more than one afternoon, and it does not go out of date once they finish it.

Still not sure, even with the age in hand. Outdoor play toys are hard to get wrong. Nearly every child enjoys something they can run, throw or kick around outside, and it gets them away from a screen for an afternoon too.

LIGHTING

Keep your slip when you pay. If the toy turns out to be the wrong age, or the family already has one, the parents can swap it for something that fits better. It takes the pressure off your choice and off theirs.

Thabo Ndlovu

Thabo Ndlovu: I used the age tip for my brother's daughter and it worked out well. I was stuck between three toys and the shop assistant asked how old she was turning, then pointed me straight to the dolls. Took five minutes in total, and she loved it.

Lerato Pretorius

Lerato Pretorius: Wooden toys are my go to now for any child I do not know. They last, they do not need batteries, and I have never had a parent tell me their child was too old or too young for one. Simple and safe every time.

Faizel Adams

Faizel Adams: Soft toys saved me at a work colleague's baby shower last month. I had no idea what the baby would be into, obviously, but a plush toy felt right and nobody can really say it was the wrong choice for a newborn.

Nomvula Botha

Nomvula Botha: Good reminder about small parts. I almost bought a toy with tiny pieces for a two year old before I checked the age guide on the box. Worth the extra minute to look before you get to the till.

FURNITURE

Keep the box and the slip with any gift you are not fully sure about. It costs you nothing and it gives the family an easy way to exchange the toy for a better fit once they know their child’s actual interests.

When you can, send the parent or caregiver a quick message first. A single line asking the child’s age and whether they already have a favourite toy type saves far more guesswork than browsing the shop shelves on your own.

Versatile toys age well. Wooden blocks, simple board games and building sets tend to suit a wider range of ages than a single character toy, so they are a safer bet when you are not sure exactly where the child’s interests sit.

Wrap the gift neatly but do not tape the box shut too firmly. Leaving it easy to open, with any tags or receipt tucked inside, makes a later exchange far less of a mission for the parents if the toy is not quite right.

Think about where the toy will actually be used. A loud toy or a messy one might suit your own home, but it is worth asking whether it will suit theirs before you commit, especially for toys with sound or lots of small pieces.

Before you pay, check the box for the age and safety mark. It is a small habit that takes a few seconds, and it means you are not relying on guesswork alone when choosing something for a child you do not know well.
