A travel shelf built for guests passing through Muizenberg Backpackers.

Muizenberg Backpackers wanted a shelf by the lounge for guests to leave and take books as they travel.

Zanele Mokoena filled it with travel guides, photography books and novels light enough to carry on.

Guests can swap a book they have finished for one they haven’t read yet, no charge either way.

What guests leave behind

Postcards, notes and the odd map turn up between the pages. We keep the shelf stocked every few weeks.

How this can be done for me?

Ask at the counter or write to us about the space you have. We will help you choose a size and put together a first batch of books to suit your guests.

How do you choose titles?

We mix well travelled paperbacks with a few new releases, leaning toward travel writing, photography and fiction that survives a long bus ride.

Once the shelf is up we visit every few weeks to restock and tidy it. You are welcome to leave books behind for other guests too.

Can anyone borrow books?

Yes, anyone staying at the backpackers is welcome to read from the shelf. Leave a book behind when you go so the next traveller has something new to pick up.
