What the roast date on the bag means
Every bag of Rooibean coffee has a roast date printed on it. That is the day we roasted the beans in Cape Town.
It tells you how fresh the coffee is, which a best before date cannot.
How to use it
Coffee tastes best from about one to four weeks after roasting. Give it a few days to settle, then drink it within a month. Buy smaller bags more often and keep them sealed.
Give whole beans a few days to rest after roasting before you brew them. Coffee straight off the roaster can taste a bit flat because the gas built up inside the bean has not settled yet.
The Sweet Spot
For most of our beans that sweet spot sits between five and twenty five days after roasting. After that they are still fine to drink, they just lose a bit of the brightness you get from a younger bag.
Thandiwe Nkosi ā Head Roaster
I taste every new batch a few days after it comes off the roaster and again a week later. That is how we decide the date range we print on the bag, not a guess but something we have actually tasted.
Megan van der Merwe ā Packing Team
We pack orders the same day they are roasted whenever we can. The sooner a fresh bag gets into a box and onto a delivery van, the sooner that date on the label actually works for you.
