SIMPLE, SOLID, COMFORTABLE
The Fynbos is the chair we would put in our own kitchens. It is solid oak from the feet up, with a gently curved back that supports you through a long Sunday lunch. The seat is 46 cm high and 44 cm deep, so it suits most dining tables, including our Table Mountain.
Each chair is shaped and sanded in our Cape Town workshop by the same small team that has made it since 2012. The joints are glued and pegged, not screwed together, so they do not work loose after a few winters or a few hundred family dinners.
We finish the oak with a natural hard wax oil. It brings out the grain, feels warm to the touch and is easy to repair at home. A light sand and a fresh coat will hide most scratches and dents.
SIZE AND COMFORT
The Fynbos measures 48 cm wide, 52 cm deep and 82 cm high, with the seat at 46 cm. That leaves enough room under a standard 75 cm table for your knees, even with a thick seat pad. It weighs 6.5 kg, which is light enough for a child to pull out but heavy enough that it will not tip when someone leans back. The back rail is shaped to sit just below your shoulder blades. We tested it with people of different heights in the showroom before we settled on the final curve. If you want more cushioning, add a Hout Bay Linen Cushion. Most customers find the bare oak seat comfortable for a full meal, though, and it is easier to keep clean.
Buy two for a small flat, or eight to go around a Table Mountain Dining Table. Because each chair is made from solid oak rather than veneer, small differences in grain and colour are normal and show it is real timber. The chairs arrive fully assembled, so there is nothing to put together. Just unwrap them, pull one up to the table and sit down.
CARE AND DELIVERY
Wipe the chair with a damp cloth and dry it straight away. Avoid harsh sprays and furniture polish with silicone, because they leave a film that the oil cannot soak through. Once or twice a year, rub in a thin coat of hard wax oil with a soft rag and let it dry overnight. In dry Highveld winters, keep the chairs away from heaters, since very dry air can open small cracks in any solid timber. In a damp Cape winter, make sure they are not standing against a cold outside wall.
We deliver across South Africa. In the Western Cape our own crew brings the chairs to your door, unwraps them and takes the packaging away. Everywhere else they travel by courier, wrapped in blankets and cardboard corners, and usually arrive in 5–10 working days. Delivery is R350, or free on orders over R2,500. The frame carries our 5-year guarantee, and you have 30 days to return unused chairs in their original packaging if they are not right for you.
