Why Simple Shapes Outlast Passing Trends

Look at a bag made forty years ago and the good ones still make plain sense today. A clean rectangle, an honest flap, a strap set exactly where your shoulder actually is. We draw our own patterns that way on purpose. The Clifton Structured Handbag and the Bree Street Buckle Tote have no clever tricks hidden away in them. They have straight lines, tight corners and hardware you can replace rather than throw away.

The Quiet Value Of An Honest Stitch

Our two founders, a leatherworker and a tailor, started back in 2018 with a saddle stitch and a great deal of patience. That same stitch is still how we close every single seam on every bag. Two needles, waxed thread, each pass locked so one broken thread cannot unzip the whole row. It is slow work. It is also the reason a Stitchfield bag comes back to us for a strap, never for a split panel.

Colours That Age Well Together

We keep four leathers: tan, cognac, charcoal and olive. Each one shifts over the years rather than fading out. Tan goes honey. Cognac deepens to a warm red-brown. Charcoal softens at the corners where your hand rests. Olive settles into something close to bushveld green. None of them clash with what is already hanging in your cupboard.

A Personalized Experience

Pairing them is simple enough. Charcoal suits city work and dark suits. Tan and cognac sit well with denim and linen right through a long Durban summer. Olive waxed canvas hides road dust better than anything else we make, which matters on a Karoo road. Whatever you choose, the recycled cotton lining stays the same warm neutral inside, so nothing shouts at you when you open it up.

Brass Hardware And Its Slow Shine

Solid brass costs a good deal more than plated steel and we use it anyway. Plating chips, rusts underneath and then stains the leather around it. Brass simply dulls to a soft gold, and a minute with a cloth brings the shine back whenever you want it. Buckles, rivets and D-rings are all the same metal, so the whole bag ages at one pace instead of in patches.

A Bag You Keep For Decades

Buying once is cheaper than buying often. A Franschhoek Pilot Bag at R3,590 works out to very little per year if it serves you well for twenty. That is the maths we build around at 47 Bree Street in Cape Town. Vegetable-tanned accents sit at the stress points, edges are burnished by hand, and the thread is waxed so it resists rot. When something does wear through, write to us. We would far rather repair a bag we made than watch it go in a bin.

Our Guarantee And Returns In Short

Seams and hardware are covered for three full years from purchase. If a stitch fails in normal use, we will fix it for you. Returns stay open for 30 days as long as the bag is unused. Courier delivery is R100 nationwide and free over R750, with 7 to 14 working days from order to your door.
