Green living: simple swaps for a lower footprint wardrobe
Living greener does not mean a complete overhaul. Start with the things you wear every day. A pair of sneakers made from hemp and recycled yarn can replace two or three synthetic pairs over the years, and the savings add up. Choose natural fibres, repair what breaks and pass on what you no longer wear.
Small swaps in a wardrobe matter. Buy fewer pairs, look after them properly and let them age well. Your feet, your wallet and the Cape coastline will all feel the difference.
Choosing greener footwear starts with knowing what your shoes are made of. Look for hemp, natural rubber, cork and recycled yarn, and ask where each part comes from. A good pair should be repairable and comfortable from the first day.
Materials worth looking for
Hemp is one of the toughest plant fibres around. It needs little water, grows quickly and returns nutrients to the soil. In a sneaker it gives a firm, breathable upper that softens with wear and looks better with age.
We would rather sell one pair that you wear for years than three that end up in a drawer. Natural rubber and cork soles can be resoled, which keeps good shoes on your feet for longer.
