I worked in an office in Johannesburg from eight to five, so I only had evenings. At first I tried to study for hours, and I quit after two weeks. Then I switched to forty-five minutes a night, and that stuck.
I started with simple pages, then moved to layouts and finally a small site for a friend’s bakery.
Small steps, done every day, add up faster than you expect. Pieter van der Merwe, Web Development InstructorThe CSS Layouts with Flexbox and Grid course gave me the structure I needed. I could pause when work got busy and carry on later without losing my place.
Protect your study time
I told my family and colleagues that Tuesday and Thursday evenings were for learning. Switching off my phone notifications made a big difference. Even on tired days, I opened the lesson and did one small task.
Build something real
Every lesson ended with a small exercise, and I saved each one. After three months I had a portfolio I could show to clients, and my first paid project came from a friend of a friend.
