Pieter van der Merwe
Web Development Instructor
Hi! I’m Pieter. I’m a developer who loves teaching. For the last few years I have taught people to code, first in classrooms and now online, and I have helped hundreds of learners build their first websites. I am also a proud Joburg local who enjoys a good braai.
Teaching Background
Before joining Leerlyn, Pieter taught at a Johannesburg technical college and ran weekend coding classes for school leavers in Soweto and Alexandra. Active in community and professional circles, he most recently led a six month web development programme as Lead Instructor and Curriculum Developer. After finishing his class, 94% of his students went on to find full-time or freelance work as developers.
I’ve since focused my time on bringing my classroom experience to an online setting. In 2021 I launched my Introduction to Web Development with React course, which has become one of the most popular courses at Leerlyn. I was also voted Leerlyn Best New Instructor of 2025.Education
I’ve spent years working out the formula for teaching technical skills, and I’m really glad to finally share what I know with you here at Leerlyn.
I can honestly say my online courses are practical, easy to follow and built for people who study after work.
