Choosing a Projector for Your Home Cinema Room
A projector gives you a big screen without a big TV. It suits a spare room, a garage or a lounge with curtains. Think about how dark the room gets and how far the projector sits from the wall.
Brightness matters most. Look for at least 2,000 lumens if the room is not fully dark. Full HD is a good start for movies, and a sound system will make a bigger difference than extra pixels. Our Fourways team can set up a test screening for you.
Brightness and Contrast
Take a few photos of your lounge before you shop. Measure the wall and the distance from the couch. Bring the numbers to our Fourways store and we will suggest a screen and stand.
- Check the brightness rating before you check the price.
- Measure your room and the throw distance first.
- Dark rooms suit lower brightness, lounges need more.
- Pick a screen that matches your wall.
- Cheap projectors often skimp on lens and fan quality.
Throw distance tells you how far back the projector sits for a given screen size. Short throw models fit small rooms. Long throw models need more space but are often cheaper. Ask us before you buy.
Screens are easy to fit once you know the wall. A fixed screen looks neat in a dedicated room, while a pull-down screen works well in a lounge that does double duty. Painted white walls can work, but a proper screen gives a sharper, more even picture. Ask about our projector screens.
Sound is half of the experience, and projectors have weak speakers. Pair yours with a soundbar or a 5.1 Home Theatre System. Run an HDMI cable, or use a Bluetooth Audio Receiver and Transmitter if the projector sits far from the amplifier. A subwoofer adds weight without turning the volume up and bothering the neighbours. “A good TV setup should feel simple. Hide the clutter, pick the right size for the room and let the picture and sound do the talking. Everything else is extra.”
