Layering textiles for winter comfort

Cape winters are wet and chilly, and many homes in the Winelands were built for summer heat rather than winter warmth. Textiles are an easy and affordable way to make rooms feel cosier. A thick rug underfoot, a wool or knitted throw on the sofa and heavier lined curtains all help keep warmth in and make spaces feel inviting.

Mix textures for interest, such as linen with wool, velvet with cotton or a chunky knit beside a smooth leather chair. Stick to your colour palette so the room still feels calm. When spring arrives, swap heavier pieces for lighter cotton and linen. Storing winter textiles in breathable bags keeps them fresh for next year.
