Getting your garden tools ready for spring

Free State winters are dry and cold, so most gardens rest for a few months. Late winter is the perfect time to get your garden tools ready before spring growth and the first rains arrive. Clean off old soil and rust, tighten loose handles and check that every tool is in good working order before you need it.

Sharpen spades, hoes, pruning shears and lawnmower blades for cleaner cuts and less effort. Service petrol mowers and trimmers by changing the oil, spark plug and air filter, or bring them to a qualified repairer. Oil metal parts lightly to prevent rust, and store tools on a wall rack so they stay dry and easy to find.
