Edible Gardens

Dealing with garden pests the natural way

Aphids, snails, caterpillars and mealybugs are part of gardening in a warm climate, and they can appear almost overnight after summer rain. Before reaching for strong chemicals, remember that healthy plants resist pests better. Good soil, the right amount of water and planting in suitable spots go a long way toward a garden that looks after itself.

Check plants regularly, especially the undersides of leaves, and remove pests by hand when numbers are low. A strong spray of water knocks off aphids, and beer traps help with snails. Encourage ladybirds and birds, which eat many pests. If you need a product, ask our staff for options that are safer around children, pets and bees.
