Garden Care

What to plant this spring

Spring in Pietermaritzburg is one of the busiest and most rewarding times in the garden. The soil warms up, the first rains usually arrive and plants are ready to grow. It is a good time to plant summer vegetables, sow annuals for colour and add new shrubs or trees so they establish before the heat of mid-summer.

In the vegetable patch, try tomatoes, peppers, beans, squash and herbs such as basil. For colour, petunias, marigolds and vincas do well in sunny beds. Feed established plants with a balanced fertiliser and refresh mulch as the weather warms. Our seasonal tables at the nursery show what is ready to plant right now.
