What to pack for a weekend in the Cederberg

A weekend in the Cederberg means hot days, cold nights and long stretches with no shops nearby, so think through your pack before you leave home. Food, water, warm layers and a decent torch matter more out there than anything flashy.

Start with the basics and build from there. A good pack, a stove that works first time, and clothes you can layer up or strip off as the temperature swings between midday heat and a sharp drop after sunset.

Less Is More

Every extra kilogram counts on the trail, so only pack what you will really use this weekend.

Pack a paper map as backup, since phone signal disappears fast once you drop into the valleys, and a dead battery should never end your day.

Water matters even more than food out here. Carry more than you think you will need and know where the next spring or stream is before you set off, since the Cederberg sun dries you out faster than you expect.

Setting Up Camp

Once you have found a flat, sheltered spot, take your time pitching before the light goes. A camp set up properly in daylight is far easier to live in once it turns dark and cold.

A good campsite is one you can find again in the dark, says local guide Thandeka Mokoena. Pick your spot with care and the rest of the trip gets easier.
