What happens when something trips

A trip means a breaker has switched off to protect your system. Stay calm and think about what was running.

Do not keep flicking it back on.

First checks

Switch off big loads like the geyser and the oven. Read the fault code on the inverter screen. Reset the breaker once. If it trips again, call your installer.

Most trips come from overload, a loose cable or water in a plug. Write down the time it happened and what was running.

When to call us

Call a qualified electrician if you smell burning, see marks on a cable or the breaker trips straight away. Never open the inverter yourself.

Thabo Nkosi – Lead Installer

Thabo leads our installation team and is usually the first call when a system trips repeatedly rather than once. He talks through the fault log with you over the phone before anyone drives out, and more often than not spots an overloaded circuit or a loose connection from the code alone. If a site visit is still needed, he is usually the one who shows up.

Pieter van Wyk – Battery Technician

Pieter handles most of our battery related call outs. When a trip is caused by a battery protecting itself, rather than a simple overload, he is the one checking cell balance, temperatures and charge settings on site. He would rather spend an extra half hour diagnosing properly than have the same system trip again the following week.

Sipho Dlamini – Electrician

Sipho is our electrician and the person we send out for earth faults, surge damage and anything involving the home's existing wiring rather than the solar equipment itself. Lightning season keeps him busy. He checks isolators, earthing and breakers before signing off that a trip was a one off and not a sign of bigger wiring trouble.

Riaan Botha – After Sales Support

Riaan runs our after sales support line, so he is usually the voice on the phone talking you through a fault code before a technician is even needed. He keeps notes on every system we have installed, which means he often remembers a site's trip history better than the homeowner does.

When to call us

A single trip that resets cleanly and does not repeat is usually nothing to worry about, just the system doing what it is designed to do. Call us when the same fault keeps coming back, when the display shows an earth fault or a code you do not recognise, or when a trip follows a storm or lightning nearby. We would always rather talk you through a fault code on the phone for free than have you ignore something that needed a proper look.
