When an upgrade beats a new machine
A new machine is not always the answer. A graphics card, more memory or a faster drive can bring an older PC back to life for less than buying new.
Parts we would put in our own machines, checked before you pay.
What We Check First
We check the processor socket, RAM type and power supply first, so you only spend on parts that make a real difference.
A tired PC is often let down by one part, not the whole machine. Swapping a hard drive for an SSD can make a five year old computer feel new for booting and loading programs.
Know When To Stop
If the motherboard cannot take more RAM or a newer processor, you have reached the end of the road for that machine, and a new build becomes the better choice.
Lindiwe Dube – Hardware Technician
Lindiwe sees machines come in every week that people were about to replace. Most of the time a clean, a new drive, or extra memory brings them right back to life. Her advice: bring the machine in first and let us look inside before you spend on something new. It often costs far less than people expect.
Sipho Ndlovu – Sales Advisor
Sipho spends his day matching parts to machines, not pushing the biggest sale. If a graphics card swap will fix your slowdown, he will tell you that instead of recommending a full new build. He says the best upgrade is the one that solves your actual problem, nothing more, nothing less.
Chanté Adams – Workshop Lead
Chanté builds and tests every upgrade on the bench before it goes back into a customer machine. She checks that the new part is seated properly, that temperatures are normal, and that nothing else is struggling once the bottleneck is gone. Nothing leaves the workshop untested.
Farhana Khan – Customer Support
Farhana handles the questions that come in after the work is done. Most calls are simple, people wanting to know if a part is still under warranty or how to clean a new cooler. She says the upgrades that get the fewest calls back are the ones matched carefully from the start.
Still Not Sure?
If you are not sure whether your machine needs an upgrade or a replacement, bring it in and let us take a look. We will tell you honestly what is holding it back, what is worth fixing, and what is not. Sometimes that means a small part swap. Sometimes it means your machine has reached the end of its road. Either way, you will know exactly where you stand before you spend anything.
