Smart watches have come a long way. A few years ago most of them were just a second screen for notifications. In 2026 the best models track your sleep, check your heart rhythm, measure blood oxygen, guide your workouts and let you pay for coffee with a tap of your wrist. Some even call for help if you fall. For South Africans, the choice is wide, from under R2,000 fitness bands to premium titanium watches that cost more than a phone. The trick is picking a watch that works with the phone you already own, fits your daily habits and has a battery that does not drive you mad.
We rated watches on five things: comfort, battery life, health tracking accuracy, app support and value for money. Phone compatibility came first, because it rules out many options straight away. An Apple Watch only works with an iPhone. Most Wear OS watches, like Samsung and Google models, work best with Android. Garmin and Huawei work with both, but with fewer smart features. Keep that in mind as you read our top three. We also looked at local support, since warranty repairs are much easier when a brand has proper service centres here.
3. Garmin for serious outdoor training
If you run, cycle, hike or do triathlons, a Garmin is hard to beat. Watches like the Forerunner and Fenix ranges have excellent GPS, detailed training plans and recovery advice that tells you when to rest. Battery life is the big win. Many models last a week or more with regular use, and some go much longer, which suits multi-day hikes in the Cederberg or Drakensberg.
Garmin will not replace your phone for messages and apps. Think of it as a sports coach on your wrist, with basic notifications added, rather than a mini smartphone.
Newer Garmin models have bright AMOLED screens instead of the old dull displays, which makes them nicer to wear to the office. Prices vary widely, so start with a Forerunner if you mostly run and only look at the Fenix range if you need tough materials and maps.
One more reason Garmin makes our list is Garmin Pay. It lets you tap to pay at most card machines, and a growing number of banks support it. Check your own bank before you buy, because support changes over time. The Garmin Connect app is also free, with no subscription needed for the core features, which cannot be said for every fitness platform. Your data is stored neatly, and you can share runs with Strava. For anyone training for the Comrades or the Two Oceans, that level of detail is well worth paying for.
2. Samsung Galaxy Watch for most Android phone owners
If you use an Android phone, especially a Samsung, the Galaxy Watch is the easy pick. It runs Wear OS with Google apps like Maps and Wallet, and it pairs smoothly with Galaxy phones like the Fold7. Health tracking is strong, with sleep coaching, heart rate alerts and body composition readings.
The Classic models bring back the rotating bezel, which many people love for scrolling through menus without covering the screen. The standard models are lighter and cheaper. Battery life is the weak spot. Expect around a day or two of use, so you will charge it most nights. A spare charger at work or next to the bed helps a lot, and it quickly becomes part of your routine.
Google Pixel Watch owners get a similar experience with Fitbit health features built in. It looks great and pairs well with phones like the Google Pixel 8 Pro. Just check the local warranty situation, since official stock is not always easy to find here.
Before you buy any Wear OS watch, check if it supports LTE. An LTE watch has its own SIM or eSIM, so you can leave your phone at home and still take calls. Not every South African network supports watch eSIM plans, and the monthly cost adds up, so confirm with your network first. Also check which carriers support your watch model.
1.Apple Watch remains the best for iPhone
For iPhone users, nothing matches the Apple Watch. It links with your phone so smoothly that notifications, calls, Apple Pay and fitness data just work. Health features are the most complete of any watch we tested, including ECG readings, fall detection and crash detection. The screen is bright and the apps are excellent.
Choose the Series model for most people, the SE if you want to save money, and the Ultra if you need longer battery life and a tougher case.
Our advice is simple. Match the watch to your phone first, then to your lifestyle. A great watch that does not work with your phone is a waste of good money. Then set a budget.
Joltbox does not stock smart watches right now, but we do have the phones they pair with, including the iPhone 17, Samsung Galaxy Fold7 and Google Pixel 8 Pro. We also carry the Belkin BoostCharge Pro 2-in-1 wireless charger, which charges a phone and a second device on one pad. Order online or visit us at 22 Loop Street.
