Ten ways to refresh your Christmas tree with new ornaments

A tree does not need to be replaced to feel new. Start by taking everything off and sorting the baubles by colour and size.Put the large pieces on first, close to the trunk, then fill the gaps with smaller ones. Add two or three new ornaments, such as a hand-painted bauble or a silver bird, so the tree looks different from last year.

Finish with ribbon or a few sprigs of dried fynbos. Step back and check the tree from the doorway before you add the last few pieces.

Start with the top

Place a star or a bird at the top first, then work downwards in a spiral. Keep heavier pieces on the strong lower branches and lighter ones near the tips. Use hooks, not string, so each bauble hangs straight. Leave some gaps and let the green show through, because a full tree can look busy and tired.

The best trees tell a story. Every ornament comes from a trip, a gift or a family Christmas, so keep the old favourites and add new ones slowly, one season at a time.

Glass baubles look best in groups of three. Hang them at different heights so the eye moves around the tree. Mix finishes such as matt, shiny and hand-painted, and repeat one colour a few times so the look stays calm. Natural pieces like feathers, wood and hessian ribbon work well with silver and bronze.

Add one handmade piece

One handmade piece gives the tree a personal touch. Try a crochet elf or a gingerbread house from our shop. Place it where the light falls, at eye level, so guests notice it first and ask where it came from.
