Safely administering pain relief to your little one

Teething, jabs and the odd fever come with the first year, and it is hard to think straight when your baby is crying. Pain relief for infants is dosed by weight, not by age, so the safest first step is a quick chat with your pharmacist or clinic sister before you give anything.

Write down the time and amount of every dose, since two tired parents can easily double up. Use the syringe that came with the bottle rather than a kitchen spoon. If your baby is under three months, very drowsy, refusing feeds or the fever will not settle, phone your doctor or clinic straight away.
