Signs your laptop needs a service

A laptop rarely breaks all at once. It usually gives a few warnings first, and catching them early keeps a small fix from turning into a full replacement.

Here are the signs our technicians see most often before a laptop comes in for real trouble.

Slow to start up

If your laptop takes minutes to boot or freezes at the login screen, the hard drive or the startup software is usually to blame, and it's one of the cheaper fixes.

A laptop working too hard will tell you, through fan noise, heat on the base, or sudden shutdowns when you least expect them.

Loud fan and heat

Dust builds up inside every laptop over time and blocks the airflow. A clean and fresh thermal paste often brings the temperature right down.

Battery health is one of the first things I check. If your laptop only lasts an hour where it used to last all day, or it shuts down at 20%, the battery is wearing out and worth replacing before it leaves you stranded.

A keyboard with sticky or unresponsive keys is usually dust or an old spill underneath, not a dead keyboard. We can often clean it out rather than replace the whole module, so don't wait until it gets worse.

Cracks around the hinge, or a screen that flickers when you move the lid, point to loose connections inside. Left alone, this wears through the display cable completely, so bring it in as soon as you notice it.

Customers often tell me their laptop just freezes or restarts on its own for no reason. That's usually overheating or a memory fault, and both are quick to test once it's on the bench.

When to bring it in

None of these signs mean your laptop is finished. Slow starts, heat, odd noises or a battery that drains fast are all things we can test on the bench and usually fix without a full replacement. The sooner you bring it in, the more options you have and the less it tends to cost.
