How to place your speaker for the best sound in any room

Where you put the Knoppie matters more than most people think. Keep it off the floor and away from thick curtains, and the sound opens up straight away.

Try a shelf at about ear height. In our Claremont workshop we test every speaker against a wall, in a corner and in the open, and the open spot wins.

Start with the wall behind it

Leave a hand's width between the speaker and the wall. Too close and the bass gets muddy. Too far and the sound feels thin. Move it a little and listen again.

Small rooms are fine for the Knoppie Speaker Mini Chalk. It fills a lounge or bedroom without shaking the shelf, and the battery lasts a full day of music.

Using it in a flat

Put it on a bookshelf or a kitchen counter, away from the fridge and the geyser cupboard. Hard surfaces bounce the sound around, so a rug or a cushion nearby helps. Keep the volume at about half and your neighbours will thank you. Most of our customers in Cape Town flats never need to go past that.

I work from a small flat and wanted something that sounded full without taking over the shelf. The Knoppie Speaker Blush does exactly that. Setup took two minutes and the Bluetooth connected the first time. I play it from morning until supper and the battery keeps going.

We took the Knoppie Speaker Max to a braai at the dam and it handled the wind, the noise and a few splashes. The sound carried across the whole garden. It is solid, easy to carry and has not let us down once since December.

I use the Smart Display 7 in the kitchen for recipes, timers and the morning news. My kids call it the clever screen. The picture is clear, the voice commands work in a noisy room and the stand keeps it steady on the counter.

During load shedding the Wireless Charging Stand and a smart plug kept my desk running smoothly. I could keep the speaker and phone topped up without hunting for cables. It is a small thing, but it saves me every evening.

Fitting it into your routine

The best speaker is the one you actually use. Put the Knoppie where you spend your mornings, such as next to the kettle, and let it play the news or your favourite playlist while you get ready. Ask it for the weather or traffic on the M3 and carry on with your day. After a week it feels like part of the house, and you will notice when it is missing.
