Planning a Kruger trip that works
Kruger rewards a little planning. Pick the right camp, keep your days realistic, and the rest of the trip looks after itself.
Start with one or two camps instead of moving every night. Check the camp bookings page early, since popular camps fill up months before school holidays.
Choosing Camps
Match the camp to what you want to see. Lower Sabie sits on the river for easy water sightings. Satara suits open grassland and cats. Punda Maria sees fewer cars and more birds, since it sits far north of the busy southern camps.
Daily Distances
Resist the urge to plan a long drive every day. Kruger rewards slow driving more than distance covered. Keep daily drives short, with stops at every waterhole along the way. Two full days at one camp usually shows you more than one night in four different camps.
Getting There
You can self-drive through Kruger in an ordinary car on the tar roads. If driving is not your idea of a holiday, ask about our guided Kruger packages, where a driver handles the roads while you watch for game. Flying into Skukuza or Nelspruit also saves the long drive down from Johannesburg.
Cursus aliquam
Choose your entry gate based on where you are driving from. Phabeni and Paul Kruger gates suit anyone coming from Johannesburg. Buy your conservation permit before you arrive, since the gate queue can be long over long weekends and holidays.
Keep your booking confirmation on your phone and as a printout, since some gates have poor signal. Arrive with enough fuel for the drive to your camp, as fuel stops inside the park are limited. Check gate opening times for the season you are travelling in, since they shift with sunrise and sunset.
