What travel insurance actually covers
Travel insurance only helps if you read it before you fly. Know what it covers and what it leaves out.
We always check a client's policy before departure, so claims do not fall apart later over a missed detail.
Medical Cover
Medical cover pays for emergency treatment, ambulance transport and evacuation by air if you are far from a proper hospital, which matters on a safari.
It will not pay for a condition you had before you left unless you declared it, so tell your insurer about any ongoing medication.
Cancellation Cover
Cancellation cover pays out for reasons like serious illness, a death in the family or retrenchment, not for simply changing your mind. Keep proof of the reason, such as a doctor's letter, and claim as soon as you can.
Most claims fail because something was not declared or a receipt was never kept. Report theft to the local police within a day for a case number, and keep every receipt and medical note from the trip.
