Getting ready for inter-house athletics day
Primary school children grow fast, so buy for the term and not for the next three years. A uniform that is too big looks untidy and can be unsafe on the playground. Measure at the start of each term and replace what is worn thin. Hand-me-downs from a cousin or a neighbour work well, as long as the seams and hems are still strong.
Keep a list of what each child has, and note which pieces need replacing before the winter term begins. It saves you a rush in the shops when the weather turns cold and every other parent is looking for the same jersey.
Check the label
Read the care label and size chart before you buy, so the fit is right.
Bring your child along so we can measure properly, and ask about name tags for the term.
Every school has its own colours and rules, so always start with the official list. Check which blazer, tie and shoes are required, and whether the school allows a plain jersey or only the one with the badge. Buy the essentials first and add extras later in the term once you know what your child really needs each day.
Start with the list
A good pair of school shoes should be sturdy, easy to polish and comfortable for a long day. Try them on in the afternoon, when feet are a little bigger, and let your child walk around the shop. Leave a thumb's width of room at the toe, and check that the heel does not slip when they walk.
Do not buy shoes two sizes too big to save money. They cause blisters and wear out unevenly. One size of growing room is enough. Polish them once a week and let them dry out overnight if they get wet.
