Picking a school bag that is kind to young backs
Every January the same thing happens. Parents arrive with a long school list, a tired child and a tight budget. At Skooldrag we see it every year in our Durbanville shop, so we have learned a few things. Start early, measure at home first and write the sizes down. A child who is measured on a calm Saturday morning is far easier to fit than one standing in a queue.
Bring last year's blazer or jersey with you if you can. It shows us how much the old one has been worn and which size your child grew out of. Most children go up one size every year.
Check the label
Read the care label and size chart before you buy, so the fit is right.
Bring your child along so we can measure properly, and ask about name tags for the term.
Check the sleeves, the shoulders and the length of the trousers before anything else. Those three show up first when a child has grown. A hem can be let down, but a tight shoulder cannot be fixed at home, so always try the blazer on over a shirt.
Buy a little room to grow
Choose the next size up for blazers and jackets, but not for shirts and skirts, which hang badly when they are too big. Keep the receipt, and check our exchange rules before you remove any tags. Name labels go in once you are sure the size is right.
A uniform that fits well in February should still fit in October. If the sleeves cover the knuckles on the first day, it is too big. If they show the wrist bone, it is too small.
